Why are hornbills so important to forests?

Hornbills are famously known as “farmers of the forests.” They inhabit the forest as fruit-eaters and play an important role in seed dispersal, thereby keeping the forests healthy and diverse. If one hornbill can scatter one seed a day, imagine how many seeds it can disperse in one year?

Yet, according to Shumpei Kitamura, a tropical ecologist and hornbill-expert, these beautiful forest farmers are threatened by everything from forest loss to hunting and pet trade. Without hornbills, our forests would not be able to grow and flourish.
