Did you know that rivers in the Rajang-Belawai-Paloh are like highways for the Irrawaddy dolphins?
The rivers in the Rajang-Belawai-Paloh are like highways for Irrawaddy dolphins. The Irrawaddy dolphins move along these rivers looking for food, feeding and socializing, like how the fishermen ply up and down the rivers looking for their sources of protein and getting from one village to the other. Proper and sustainable activities management along these rivers are necessary for both dolphins and fishermen to co-exist and benefit mutually.
Ecological surveys had been carried out by WWF-Malaysia together with Sarawak Forestry Corporation, Institute of Biodiversity and Environmental Conservation of University Malaysia Sarawak, Inland Fisheries Division and Forest Department Sarawak along Rajang-Belawai-Paloh delta between 2017 and 2018. Survey results and recommendations for conserving Irrawaddy dolphins in the area were shared with Sarawak Timber Industry Development Corporations (STIDC) to be integrated into the Tanjung Manis Economic Growth Area Master Plan. STIDC has shown their support for the conservation of the dolphins and the mangroves that form part of their habitat.
