Indy’s News

With Bunny “down” with his eye injury, Indy started targeting Cow instead. I have had to break up a few war-crying posturing episodes between the two. Cow did not start them; Indy did.

Then, just now, Indy chased Cleo all over the garden to the room.

Maybe he is just playing, or maybe he has too much energy and needs to let off some steam.

Today’s stool report: Discovered blood-tinged soft stool at 8.20am. I don’t know if this was passed during the night, early morning or just before 8.20am because believe it or not, Indy changed his poo-spot in the sandpit. I normally check his usual spot and around it the moment I wake up every morning, and I did, but I didn’t check this new spot (never expected it).

Yesterday, my husband cleared the sandpit of some weeds, so Indy shifted his poo-spot to another place in the sandpit.

Now, I have to check the entire length of the sandpit and I did today but so far, there has been no faeces apart from the patch I discovered at 8.20am this morning.

Is the Boulardii+Slippery Elm+raw food (chicken fillet and Cubgrub) working? Again, it’s too early to tell.

Indy keeps asking for food, so it means he still has an appetite, which is good.

I really, really hope the treatment will work because I don’t want to have to make the decision of putting him on Metronidazole (a more specific antibiotic for Giardiasis). I also hope we don’t have to resort to putting him on any gastrointestinal prescription kibble (it has worked for many, many cats, though).

A friend helped me analyse Indy’s symptoms and what we have done so far and it did make some sense. When Indy was on Clavamox, his stools firmed up for a week but the moment the Clavamox finished, there was loose stools again. An obvious hypothesis would be that the Clavamox, being an antibiotic, killed off the bad bacteria in the gut, hence, the stools firmed up. But then again, it also killed off the good bacteria. The moment the antibiotic was taken off, the problem started again. Does this mean Indy would have to be on long-term antibiotics? This doesn’t sound good, especially when Indy already has one compromised kidney. So the friend suggested that I should let the body and immune system resolve the problem instead of relying on any long-term medication. His main concern, being a raw-feeder, is that antibiotics will destroy the good bacteria and this is really not good for digestion or absorption of nutrients. He also said that after a course of antibiotics, the gut would need time to adjust back and time is needed to build back healthy flora for healthy functioning again.

The argument does make sense to me.

I’m keeping a detailed record of what happens for Indy. The record should be useful in making decisions on which way to go.
