Where Does Our Tap Water Come From?. Before Treate..

Where does our tap water come from?🧐

Before treated water services were introduced, people would have to physically go to the nearest river to get water or collect rainwater for drinking, cooking, washing etc. Imagine having to spend all of that time and effort just to get something as basic as water! Sadly, this is still applicable in certain rural areas in Malaysia.😢

These days, the river closest to your home is not necessarily where your water supply comes from. For example, if you live in Klang Valley, it is likely that your tap water comes from Sungai Selangor, which originates from Fraser’s Hill water catchment forest in Pahang. Sungai Selangor supplies about 60% of the water needed by the people in Klang Valley.

How can you find out where your water comes from if you live in Selangor? 🤓

Find the previous water disruption announcement for your neighbourhood by Air Selangor, and look closely at the name of the affected water treatment plant. Then:

1. Go to Lembaga Urus Air Selangor’s website (luas.gov.my)

2. Click on “Maklumat Sumber Air*”.

3. Choose “Profil Lembangan Sungai Negeri Selangor*” from the dropdown list.

4. Look at the “Muka Sauk dan Loji Pembersihan Air (LPA) Terlibat” (sixth column) to find the affected water treatment plant, then look to your left where you will see the name of the river basin in the second column.

5. That river basin* is where your water comes from J

So, which river basin in Selangor does your water come from? Let us know in the comments below!

*INFO:

River basin = a landed area drained by a particular river and its tributaries

Maklumat Sumber Air = Information on water resources

Profil Lembangan Sungai Negeri Selangor = Profiles of river basins in Selangor

Muka Sauk = Water intake point. This is a point in a river where water is diverted or pumped to a reservoir/dam.

Loji Pembersihan Air (LPA) = Water treatment plant. Raw water needs to be treated to remove impurities and pollutants to meet safe drinking water standards before it is distributed to water users.
