My name is Noklek. I’m an old boy who’s been through a lot in my 10 years. Until recently, I was homeless. I’m a good boy, but bad things have been happening to me, especially lately.

Soi Dog Foundation, and the local animal lovers who help them, search the streets here all the time, looking for dogs like me (cats, too) who need help. Boy, did I ever need some! Like I said, I’m an old boy. I haven’t had my own home or a human to love me and look out for me in I don’t know how long. I was just trying to get along the best I could. I don’t know what I did wrong, but another dog bit me hard on my right ear. I was so shocked and in so much pain, I ran away and hid.

Later, I heard the humans say a nice lady saw what happened to me and was looking for me for a whole week! They said she was quite worried about me. I was surprised, because I didn’t know anyone noticed or cared about me at all.

I stayed hidden for what felt like ages. My hurt ear felt really painful, and like something was crawling on it. Ugh! But I didn’t know what to do, so I just laid there. I was too scared and weak to do anything else. But after all those days in hiding, I got really hungry. I decided to take a chance on dragging myself out to find anything I could to eat.

That’s when the kind lady caught me! I was startled and scared, of course, but too weak to do anything but go along with her. She called Soi Dog Foundation when we got to her house, and they came and collected me.

The humans at the Soi Dog hospital looked very shocked and concerned when they saw me. My ear was bloody and oozing with infection, and maggots had gotten into my wound – that’s what I had felt crawling around. Yuck!

At this point, I felt pretty worried…I didn’t know what was going to happen to me in this place full of steel tables and sharp instruments. But it turned out fine! The nice Soi Dog vets got to work on me right away, carefully and gently cleaning maggots from my ear and from a few smaller wounds on my neck and right leg. Soon I started feeling MUCH better.

These days I’m recovering at the Soi Dog shelter. I have other problems common in old boys like me, such as a cataract and a heart murmur. I was also infested with ticks, my right eye had a severe infection, and I’ve been depressed (who wouldn’t be, in my paws?).

But don’t worry, because I’m getting all the care I need here. And I’m eating as much good food as I want, and sleeping soundly in a soft place. I feel safe and cared about. I never dreamed life could be this good. I don’t know if all dogs really go to heaven, but I sure feel like I have!

Sadly, most homeless dogs and cats in Thailand aren’t as lucky as I was. There are countless animals here in danger of getting terribly hurt, sick or abused. They have no one to help them but people who really love animals, like you.
