Community members in Berungus, Pitas, conducting patrolling activities around their coastal area. The local community has initiated community-based patrolling since the early 2000s, after realising that the decline in their fish catch was due to unsustainable practices such as fish bombing, cyanide use and
encroachment of fishing trawlers. Due to their dedicated efforts over the years and through the support of WWF-Malaysia fish stocks are now on the rise, with more income gained and lower amounts of fuel used on fishing trips.
Today marks the International Day for the World’s Indigenous Peoples, WWF-Malaysia honours the contributions of indigenous peoples towards #conservation.
