International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem is celebrated on 26 July every year.
Do you know that mangroves are very important to Irrawaddy dolphins in the Rajang-Belawai-Paloh Delta, Sarawak?
This is because dolphins feed on the fishes which breed within the mangrove ecosystem. Mangroves are important as they serve as nurseries and refuge for many marine life.
Protecting mangroves not only helps to preserve biodiversity, but also provides vital resources for coastal communities.
What can you do to conserve mangrove forests?
1. Practice sustainable extraction of mangrove resources (e.g. wood and food sources).
2. Report any illegal mangroves logging to Forest Department Sarawak at 1-800-88-7777.
3. Replant mangrove trees.
