It’s #WetlandsWednesday! Did you know apples can grow in mangrove forests?

It’s not the usual apple that you’ll find in supermarkets. This here is the mangrove apple tree (Sonneratia caseolaris), which is known as “berembang” in Malay. Its fruit doesn’t look like an apple though – it actually looks more similar to a persimmon!

Mangrove apple fruits are food for the Critically Endangered painted terrapins (Batagur borneoensis) while the trees host wonderfully sparkling fireflies (Pteroptyx sp.) at night.
