Over the past 2 Days, Soi Dog has co-ordinated & funded the mass evacuation of what's become known as "Dog Island". For the past 6 weeks, over 150 dogs have been stranded on a bridge & adjoining island in the Phuttamonthon Budhist Park. Although the dogs were being fed by their carer, their health was deteriorating & they had no access to fresh water. Diseases were starting to surface & the general health of the dogs was in rapid decline. In the best interests of these dogs it was decided to remove them all & transport them to the WFFT (Wildlife Friends of Thailand) Shelter in Cha Am. They will stay here until the flood waters subside & then be returned. This was a huge logistical exercise involving Soi Dog Foundation, WFFT, the Royal Thai Army, experienced dog catchers & over 50 volunteers. The event was also covered by Thai television media crews & several journalists.
Day 1. The day began early with a 3 hour truck ride from Bangkok to Putthamonthon where Dog Island is located. A vet team arrived mid-morning to check the overall general health of the dogs & identify the ones needing urgent care. Whilst this was happening, loads of volunteers got to work scrubbing down the bridge with water & disinfectant. Raised feeders were also constructed from pipe & concrete blocks, so the dogs do not have to eat off the floor. Special treats were also given to the dogs by volunteers including crackers & sweet biscuits. They were eagerly received!
Around the bridge are several smaller islands which are partially submerged. Many dogs also live on these islands & were also in danger of becoming ill due to the wet conditions. Our dog catchers went out on boat rescue missions to capture these dogs who were very scared as they had no idea what was happening. However our experienced catchers made quick work of rounding up these dogs & capturing them by nets as quickly as possible. The Thai lady who cares for these dogs also accompanied the boats as her close relationship with the dogs made the capture easier. We managed to capture another 50 dogs on these surrounding islands, bringing the total number to around 200.
By late afternoon, the bridge was much cleaner & everything was organised for the return trip the following morning to remove the dogs. Several very sick dogs where taken in the boat with Soi Dog & admitted to vet hospitals in Bangkok. Most of these had symptoms of blood parasite disease & pneumonia.
Where is "Dog Island"???

It is highlighted by a 15.87 m (52 ft) high Buddha statue, which is considered to be the highest free-standing Buddha statue of the world. The park was created in 1957 & covers 400 hectares (2500 rai). It is the center of Buddhism in Thailand.
