Fish Oil For Cats – A Comparison

A comparison between NatureMade (for humans) and Coatex (for pets):

Coatex has borage oil and its fish oils’ source is not specified. NatureMade’s fish oil comes from mackerel, anchovies, etc. The smaller fishes are supposed to be less toxic because they are lower on the food chain.

Borage oil is rather controversial. Some websites say it is very good for skin problems in pets, but some say it is highly toxic for cats!

Pro: Borage oil is good for cats because it is very rich in GLA, or gamma linolenic acid, a special fatty acid. Because of this, borage oil for cats is routinely included into mass manufactured cat food as well as in homemade cat food recipes.

Con: The toxic properties of the borage plant include tannins and mucilage. … Both of these substances are toxic to cats, and can cause damage in the liver and kidneys. The borage plant, also known as the starflower, is an herb that is incredibly toxic to cats. The plant may also cause mild skin irritation in humans.

NatureMade is a human product, and each capsule is 1200mg which the vet says it’s too much for cats and can cause diarrhoea. So, less would have to be used. Previously, I used about 8-10 capsules in my homecooked food of 2.6kg of meat. But I’ve seen learnt that fish oil should be given “fresh” because it gets oxidised very quickly once exposed.

Then, there’s Ark Naturals’ Royal Coat (a pet product):

It is formulated by veterinarians and also contains borage oil.

So, will the best fish oil for cats stand up, please??!!

I have purchased krill oil before too. I wonder if that might be a better choice? It would the smallest marine animal (the least toxic?).
