TRUCK REPAIRS AT COW SANCTUARY
____________________________________
For several years, Harmony Fund has been helping to sponsor the care for many animals rescued before slaughter in Chiang Mai. Caring for these animals is no small task for the rescue center’s founder Marianne Willemse who is now in her 80s and still engaged in hard, physical work each day.
“The land is too small to supply all the grass the animals need,” Marianne explained. “We have to provide formula to ensure they get the nourishment they need. We also buy straw husk and hay bales as they need to chew all day. Workers also go to riverbanks to cut fresh grass for all of them, every day. They look for places to cut grass all over the ‘community.”
Though thankfully most of the cows will come when she calls them by name, there is still the need for maneuvering when veterinary intervention is required or when fences need repair. Therefore, the cows each wear a loose, un-tethered rope that can be used similar to a dog leash when needed. And lately, the older cows are beginning to need more care.
“Three of the old toothless cows, over 20 years old, need peeled bananas mixed with food formula because they are no longer able to chew straw,” Marianne continues. “But now we have a big problem: Our truck broke down.”
“I’m so exhausted from not having it for over two weeks now. I live in the forest, so I have to walk four kilometers every morning to get to the cows. From that village I have to get a motorcycle with a side car to go pick up animal food at market that is five kilometers away. This almost a daily process as can’t fit a lot of cow bags, bananas, dog food and so forth in there. The bike costs just over $9 round trip. It’s getting expensive without the truck. It’s over $125 already.”
“The mechanic just called and its fixed now, but I don’t have any money to get it out,” Marianne continued. “It broke down twice. First it was the gears & brake system. I had it just one day and a valve in the engine burst, so now its back with mechanic for another week.”
The truck repairs came to $566 and Marianne had to pay for it with the money that would normally be spent on food. This is one of several unplanned expenses this month, but we know the sanctuary can’t function without that old truck.
We would be very grateful for your donations so that we can buy enough food for the month, now that there is a shortage. Although not as “popular” as the dogs & cats, we think cows deserve food, shelter and love every bit as much as the smaller animals do.
Thank you.
