Hi everyone,
I’ve just come back from Melaka after a long day, from 7am until 8pm. I was invited to conduct a seminar over there. My apologies to everyone who had written emails and sent smses – I can only reply you now as I had four sessions to conduct all day and there were only lunch and tea break.
While I was in Melaka, I was also coordinating arrangements for Courage.
Last night, the acupuncturist, Dr Susanna Brida, responded to my request and said she would be happy to give acupuncture treatment for Courage. We thank her very much for this. She estimates that at least 8 treatments would be necessary. That is not a problem at all. We would definitely do whatever is necessary and beneficial for Courage.
Meanwhile, I was still sourcing a caregiver for Courage as the clinic has a distemper-parvo puppy who just checked in yesterday. The puppy is in their isolation ward, but whatever it is, there is still a slight risk of Courage catching the infection because Courage is a street dog who had probably not been vaccinated. I called another vet, and he too had a parvo puppy, so that’s out.
PAWS offered to house Courage for me temporarily and we thank them very much for the offer.
Soon, the heavens shone on Courage and a friend offered to take her in for three days while we continue looking for a fosterer. My immediate concern was to get her out of the clinic simply because I did not want to risk her getting infected by the puppy.
I texted the vet to do a distemper test on Courage, just in case her nasal discharge was due to distemper. The vet said it was unnecessary as he was quite sure it was just mild flu due to the rain. The distemper test kit is also not accurate. He prefers not to rely on the test, but to go by symptoms (nasal discharge, cough, diarrhoea, skin lesions, twitching). Courage only had nasal discharge.
At the same time, I also contacted another vet and to cut a long story short, this vet was willing take in Courage, but also only temporarily. I only asked for boarding and explained that Courage might need the extra cleaning as she cannot control her urination. We will supply all the medication needed, the physiotherapy, acupuncture treatment, etc. We just needed a safe place to put her and for someone who is willing to attend to her sanitary needs.
By afternoon, my friend had picked up Courage and was bringing her back to her house. She brought Courage to her vet and the distemper test was done. It was negative. What a relief! There was no further news after that and I trust all would be well.
By the time I reached home and checked my email box, the heavens had sent another guardian angel for Courage. KT Tan, a reader of this blog, wrote to me offering to foster Courage until a more suitable candidate is found. KT says he has no experience in doing physiotherapy or looking after a paralysed dog, but he is willing to learn.
What more can we ask for? This is truly a star shining on Courage. Or more accurately, two stars. Thank you, KT. I will contact you soon.
I am currently awaiting news from my friend who has taken Courage back. She prefers anonymity and I will respect that.
Meanwhile, while I was in Melaka, I was a conducting the seminar at the Buddhist centre, Seck Kia Eehn. I mentioned to them about Courage because they could see I was busy making calls and texting away at every available moment. In the spirit of generosity and compassion, many of the devotees came forth to donate towards Courage’s medical needs.
I am particularly touched when a senior and very well-respected member, Bro Oh, who himself is paralysed, came forward in his wheelchair, and said to me, “I would like to give something to the dog who is in the same condition as I am” and his wife handed over their donation. That was a very poignant moment for me.
I wish to thank all their members for their kindness.
We are all blessed that so many people have come forth to help Courage.
Please pray that more guardian angels will help Courage and that she will recover in time. Let us channel positive thoughts and healing energy to her.
