Below is a message from Humane Society International:
Think about the dog in your life and what makes him or her so special. Maybe it’s her silly grin and sneezy bark that welcomes you at the door. Or perhaps it’s how his tail wags wildly as he “patiently” waits for his meal. Whatever it is, your dog owns your heart. But can you imagine that instead of your beloved friend living with you in a safe home, he lived on the streets?
For street dogs around the world, it’s a vastly different life. Food is a challenge, often limited to scraps in garbage. Few people care about their pain. And barking dogs often are abused until the noise stops. Through no fault of their own, street dogs are widely considered a “nuisance” and are killed routinely and inhumanely — by poisoning, shooting, gassing — in a terribly misguided effort to control overpopulation.
You can make a difference for them. Become a Street Dog Defender today by joining Humane Society International’s special monthly giving program. You’ll be part of a caring community — 600 strong and growing — who want to make the world a kinder place for street dogs, every day of the year.
As a Street Dog Defender, your donation goes a long way: just $20 a month vaccinates 60 dogs against rabies or sterilizes eight females so mothers and puppies no longer suffer and die during pregnancy, birth, and nursing. You also support critical efforts to
- curb overpopulation through humane and effective spay and neuter programs
- provide training for veterinary students and technicians
- instruct local officials in humane animal control methods, and
- educate local communities to help change attitudes and behavior toward street dogs.
These are the fundamental elements of a better life for street dogs, and your generous support today will make that possible. Will you join us?
Over the last 20 years, we’ve made tremendous strides to help street dogs and change local community behavior toward them:
- In Bhutan, in cooperation with the government, we’ve spayed, neutered and vaccinated 30,000 dogs, with a goal of 50,000 in the next two years;
- In Ahmedabad, India, we have assisted the prestigious business school there to make their campus a safe, welcoming place for street dogs;
- In the Philippines, we’ve worked with the Cebu city government to implement humane management instead of catching street dogs in wire nooses and gassing.
Your support truly does make a difference, but so many more dogs still need you. Please help us continue this life-changing work and become a Street Dog Defender today.
Thank you for all you do for animals.

I am particularly interested in and inspired by the specific projects they have done in Bhutan, India and the Philippines. Here’s where we can think of what we can do, even in very small ways, in our own community. We may not be a large organisation like HSI, but it does not mean we cannot make a difference.
It’s like the One-Street CNRM that I have been promoting all this while. It need not be a big project. It could very well be small, managed by just one person, taking care of the animals on our street. Believe me, it does make a difference. Not only are the animals helped, but what you do inspire others.
AnimalCare was started by me, with the target to help just 10 animals per year. We ended up helping 660 in the first year. And now, 1435 and still counting. What does it take to make it work? Passion, determination and hardwork. That’s about it.
Don’t wait. Start small, and it can remain small and still make a BIG difference to the animals. Look at the various small groups out there making a big difference and doing a great job in their own ways.
I have been asked if I plan to take AnimalCare to greater heights. Nope, definitely not. It’s doing fine as it is, small enough for me to manage alone, and as I’ve always said, once we have no more funds, we will close shop. We have no liabilities and no debts. It is easy to manage AnimalCare. Just takes a bit of hard work, and that’s about it. And hard work is fun, if you like what you do!
