OUR CAT & FARM ANIMAL SANCTUARY
The Animals Here Need Food
____________________________
Near Harmony Fund’s New England headquarters, volunteer Karen Farrington has laid out the welcome mat at her large, two-story barn to create a beautiful sanctuary for more than 60 feral cats and more than a dozen farm animals saved from neglect and slaughter.
The bottom floor of the barn is inhabited by horses, ponies, mini horses, a mini cow and a mini mule. They love roaming the landscape daily to graze and live without the expectation to “do” anything other than to simply be themselves.
Upstairs at the barn, the cats rule the roost with lots of places to climb and sleep and play. A fenced, outdoor area allows the cats to descend the outside of the building and explore nature on sunny days. This is truly paradise for these cats, most of whom were forced out of their former neighborhoods, and some of whom had suffered extreme neglect in a captive environment. Though some of the cats have become friendly and welcome human attention, others prefer to exist only in the cat world and to be allowed to enjoy their lives without domestication.
We purchase kibble, canned food and litter monthly for the 50 + feline residents. The farm animals need hay and grain. With the support of volunteers who come to clean the barn, we keep costs as low as possible. However, it’s no small thing to feed such a large herd. Total costs for the care of the animals is just over $2,850 per month, not including any special veterinary care needs. We truly need help with the costs of caring for these beautiful animals.
