She Only Wishes for One Thing on Her Birthday

Manuela Wroblewski has spent 9 years walking in a daily mission to feed hundreds of homeless cats she discovered in Avsallar, Turkey. She gave up her career, her friends and her family life to stay and care for them. But now, all she wants is to go home to Germany before this mission kills her.

“In all my years of animal rescue, I have never met a woman as relentless in her physical and emotional devotion,” Harmony Fund Founder Laura Simpson said.”But now, I am afraid for Manuela’s life.”

Manuela who turns 51 today, was diagnosed with lupus this past year. She also needs surgery to remove cysts from her liver and she is suffering from a deep vein thrombosis which is not resolving with medication because she simply can not get off her feet.

We have been trying for 3 years straight to recruit a team of tough heroes to commit to a 18 month role here, similar to a Peace Corp mission, so that Manuela can return to Germany and get the health care she desperately needs. Within the local community, cats are strongly disliked and even in the capitol of Istanbul, we have been unable to find rescuers willing to relocate. We have tried many, many times internationally as well, but each person has backed out in the end, leaving Manuela trapped with a local woman named Serpil who helps feed the cats. It’s just the two of them, and they both are too tired to go on.

“I must leave,” Manuela says tearfully. “I am exhausted after 9 years. I need to go home. I can’t bear anymore. I don’t want to die here, but I can not leave the cats without food. Someone must feed them. They come running when they see me, its their only human kindness. I can’t leave them to starve.”

GOOD THINGS ARE IN THE WORKS

A sanctuary is being built for the cats and ground has already been broken. Although we do need funding to complete that project, it will allow us to eventually relocate the cats from the feeding route to this location so that they can be cared for in a safe setting.
