Below are some updates from Judy Chua, who is helping Oei Phaik Imm manage her animal shelter in Tambun, Ipoh.
Flashback: In March this year, Judy wrote to me to seek help for Phaik Imm, who is in her sixties. At that point in time, Imm was depressed, frustrated and in very poor health. She was facing grave financial problems in upkeeping her shelter and her animals, and even had thoughts of getting all her animals euthanised, because she could no longer cope. Being one who also suffers from periodical depressions, I totally understand her predicament, so I wrote to Imm and told her to hang on; we’ll help her out.
Appeals for help were sent out in this blog and through emails, forwarded to various mailing lists. Help started pouring in – sometimes this is all due to affinity, because some appeals get response whereas others don’t.
Imm was really blessed because the sum collected enabled her to get back on her feet, and two donors, PC Leong and Chew, pledged monthly donations. Friends from Ipoh also came forward to help by going into the shelter and helping Imm with the daily cleaning.
So far, Imm has enough every month.
Here are the latest updates from Judy Chua:
Imm finally managed to get a reliable worker to come and clean the kennels & drains daily fom Mon to Friday for RM400 per month. Ravi started on 1 Nov and comes in the a’noon around 2pm after his morning job at a cafe. With Ravi coming on board, Yvonne and Carol have decided to take a break but will come in to help when needed. I still do my two days (Wed and Sun) at the shelter to clean the cattery and check on the cats, and Ah Mei continues with her Sats. to bathe the dogs. Imm still goes in daily each morning to feed the cats and dogs but leaves the doggy bowls for Ravi to clean and fill with kibbles before he leaves. Ravi said he’s happy to come in daily for an extra RM100. It has been quite a gruelling year for both of us, esp’ly Imm, and it will def’ly be helpful to have a regular worker do the daily cleaning. So, we have asked Ravi to come in daily commencing 1 Dec. Imm and I are looking fwd to having more time to see & attend to the overall welfare of the cats and dogs. At present, we are often too tired and exhausted from the day’s cleaning to give all of them special attention.
I’m sure you’ll be pleased to know that all sick cats and dogs are now attended to immediately unlike the early days. All of them generally look much better than when you first saw them. I am fostering 4 of the shelter’s cats in my home ..Fluff, Kit-kat, Timmy and Maemi ..requiring special care. A few have also come in for short term stays till they recover. So far only one (Spunky) have died in my home. He ate well for two days and then gave up. I am so glad I was with him when he drew his last breath.
These are photos taken in March 2011.
