Vincent’s Blood Test Results (Yay!)

Time for your check-up at the vet’s, Vincent!

Waiting for our turn.

Okay, now, where do I begin to tell today’s story? There’s so much to tell.

The vet says Vincent really looks good.  He weighed 3.3kg at the vet’s (using the clinic scale). His hydration is good and we are to maintain the subcut at 200ml daily.

The ulcers aren’t as inflamed, but they are still there.  This is due to an auto-immune condition so we really don’t have a solution to it, but if Vincent can eat, that’s good enough.  The vet also said she couldn’t smell anymore bad breath. The ulcers have no more pus. From what I could see, I think ulcers have healed a lot. It’s no longer red, but pink.

We can reduce the Tramadol (painkiller for the ulcers) from twice daily to once now and monitor to see if Vincent can still eat as before.

The vet also prescribed this product below. It contains enzymes to help with dental hygiene.

Cats and dogs normally love the taste and are willing to lick it off.

Next, we need to check for iron deficiency and anaemia since Vincent had been eating soil and licking pebbles. It’s just their natural instinct when they lack minerals.

The vet took an ear prick and did a blood morphology – no signs of anaemia and the white blood cells have decreased in volume too – all good. It probably means the ulcers are healing (less infection?).

Then, blood was drawn from the leg for a full blood profile. We waited for the results.

Here’s it is:

The creatinine has increased a bit but the vet said she wouldn’t be too concerned about because it may be Vincent’s “normal”. She doesn’t just look at the numbers, but the overall condition of the animal. And based on what she sees, it’s good enough.

The urea has come down!! Yay!! This is probably thanks to Azodyl and the probiotics (which I painstakingly lace into his food).

The phosphorus is back to normal!!!!  Hooray!!

The globulin is still high and this is because of the mouth ulcers (it’s auto-immune, so there’s nothing much we can do about it).

Liver readings are all normal. Yay!

Now comes the electrolyte readings. The vet was quite concerned about these. But guess what…………

ALL NORMAL and actually, good!!!

Wow!!!  The vet was so pleased with this.

Of course we think it’s because of the raw food. Raw food has everything in good proportion simply because it’s their natural food. So, it would be the most suitable food for them, CKD or otherwise.

The PCV (packed cell volume) test also shows that Vincent is NOT anaemic. Anything about 25% is normal. Vincent’s is 26%, so it’s kind of borderline. So, the vet said to give him a multi-vit supplement. We have Complivit so we will give that.

It’s very common for CKD cats to be anaemic because the kidney produces a hormone that stimulate the bone marrow to produce red blood cells. So, when the kidneys fail, this hormone is no longer produced. Hence, anaemia happens.

Since Vincent’s phophorus level is normal now, the antacid can be decreased to 1.5ml once a day.

We will continue with the Azodyl and Fortekor. Tramadol reduced to once a day. Antacid also reduced in amount and also just once a day.

On our own, we are going to continue with the raw food (of course, of course). I will add liver and heart for him. Wheatgrass too.

Now, about his soil-eating and pebble-licking…if it’s not anaemia and not leukemia, the vet thinks Vincent is lacking in some minerals, so she suggests that I dry-blend the renal kibble and sprinkle it on his food. There may be some minerals in the prescription diet that Vincent needs. I tried putting a few renal kibbles on his food just now and he just bypassed them and left them behind.

Next follow-up will be 10-14 days from today.

Hooray!!

Back home!!

Many thanks to everyone who has been rooting for Vincent!! I didn’t think I would see today, really. For this, I must thank my friend, Cathy, for suggesting that we see this present vet, and also for helping to do so much research on food and diet. And for “bonking me on the head” when I was undecided about the raw diet. I deserved to be bonked on the head!

And also thanks to Mr Ang of Coco&Joe’s for specially doing a rabbit and turkey recipe for Vincent during his lowest point, and Lin Li of Cubgrub for taking an interest in Vincent’s condition.

My order of 5kg for Coco&Joe’s Chicken Recipe and Turkey Recipe arrived today.

And I’ve just re-ordered more Cubgrub for Vincent and all our cats. I’m ordering Chicken, Rabbit and Duck.

Duck story coming up next….
