In response to Prime Minister Tun Mahathir Mohammad’s call to use coal in Sabah during the 22nd Conference of the Electric Power Supply Industry (CEPSI) 2018, WWF-Malaysia calls for the new Malaysian government to pick renewable energy options instead of coal.

Carbon pollution from coal is a leading contributor to climate change. Besides environmental and economic benefits, phasing out coal also has public health benefits. More than 800,000 people die each year globally from pollution created from burning coal.

Phasing it out is a key step in achieving the emissions reductions needed to limit global warming to 1.5°C, as enshrined in the Paris Agreement.

WWF-Malaysia supports the Malaysian government’s commitment to the Paris Agreement. Renewable energy would be an option that protects the future of Sabah.
