Mercola’s Complete Probiotics And Lunchtime
Tweet | ![]() |
I ordered Mercola’s Complete Probiotics on Friday (14th Sept) and it arrived today!!
A bit of background about it first.
It is highly recommended by Dr Karen Becker: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uZ4RIW1rDM0.
I also have used it before for Tiger previously (bought from Asia Paws when Tiger went for acupuncture). It was also recommended by Dr Susanna Santhiram. I gave it to Tiger and also the rest of the cats by adding it into their food.
My friend, PF, shared that she uses it for her pet cat, who has PKD (polycystic kidney disease) which is a genetic condition diagnosed when her cat was 6.5 years old. Her cat just celebrated his 15th birthday this year!! According to PF, Azodyl might not contain the full range of probiotics, but Mercola’s does. We need these bacteria to help break up the urea in animals with kidney disease.
So, I quickly ordered it (through the original website) and paid extra for the express delivery charges. Vincent was in a bad state at that time and I was desperate. Honestly, Vincent looked so bad that I wondered if the delivery might be “too late”. That’s how bad he looked on Friday…
It arrived today, as promised – 3 to 6 business days.
I was so excited but a wee bit anxious – will Vincent smell it out and turn away from his food? It was already a great achievement that he is willing to eat, and an added bonus that he is willing to eat organ meats now. Can I risk it by adding something more?

Look, Vincent! It has arrived! I bought this for you!!

For therapeutic use, the dosage for cats is 1 scoop.
I took a deep breath and decided to plunge in. So I put a fair amount on top of Vincent’s raw meat. It wasn’t a whole scoop, though. But it was a fair amount.

At first, Vincent avoided the powder on top and went around it to get the chicken pieces.
Please eat it, Vincent…I prayed.
And yes!!
He ate it!!!!!
Yay!!!!!
And I quickly added in organs (heart and liver) and Vincent was soon chomping away, eating up everything!
I’m now convinced that Vincent “listened” to his vet yesterday and is trying to make up for not eating organs previously.
Today, after finishing all the organs, while there were still chicken pieces in the bowl, Vincent looked up at me and I think he was asking for more organs!
So, yes, I gave him a bit more.
But we cannot overdose on organs. There should be more muscle meat.
So, what I did was to pour in the “gravy” (mostly blood).

Yes, that is what he wanted. Maybe he has just discovered that he likes the taste of organs, so he wants it now. The “gravy” was enough to make him continue eating.
Yay!! This is a great lunch!
Meanwhile, I have also ordered Coco&Joe’s barf (which we used last time). They have now removed garlic from their recipe, so I’ll like to try that again with my cats. At least there is some variety.
Vincent is eating muscle meat and organs now, but he also needs the nutrients from bone (like calcium). I have bone meal but I don’t think I want to add that in right now. It does have some odour.
Coco&Joe’s cat barf has been tested for their Calcium:Phosphorus ratio.
I’m waiting for the C&J to arrive, probably tomorrow. Cleo and Pole used to love it. But Bunny could not eat it at the time (previous recipe). Bunny can eat Cubgrub, though.
Back to Mercola’s probiotics, I’m planning to give it to all my cats. Here’s why and it’s just my own theory based on my own understanding. Not only will it benefit their gut and digestion, but all my cats are aging and some are senior cats (Cow, Bunny, Pole, Heidi, Cleo, Indy), so in case there is urea that needs breaking down, the probiotics will do the job. Sooner or later, kidney problems might set in since it’s common with senior cats.
The above is my own decision, based on my unqualified understanding.
The senior vet also reminded me on Saturday that he had already cautioned me previously (when he did Vincent’s tooth extraction two years ago) that gingivitis/stomatitis will eventually lead to kidney issues. So, it was inevitable that Vincent gradually came to his present condition.
I don’t brush my cats’ teeth and they also don’t chew bone, so I am sure they will all have some sort of gum problems. I already know that Cow has one rotten tooth, Indy has gum problems (sometimes he paws at his mouth too), Ginger has bad gums (checked by vet) and Heidi used to have bad breath (she had bad teeth too, when she first came to us).
Please consult your vet for informed and professional opinions on the health and nutritional needs of your pets.
