Why can’t I bath your dog after vaccination?
This is the common question people asked during the mass vaccination when they were told so, not to give shower on their dogs for next 5days.
The vaccines used to treat your dog as preventative medicine are most likely attenuated vaccines, contain a small live part of the germ it is used to inoculate the dog against. It stimulates an immune response in the canine and these produce the antibodies created to prevent contracting the disease fully. It is used for the common diseases to which a dog is exposed, some of which can be life threatening.
As the vaccine contains a live culture, it essentially works by making the dog a little sick. During the day of inoculation, the dog may exhibit some sickness symptoms as its body fights what has been introduced into the organism.
The degree to which the vaccine affects an individual dog depends on the GENERAL WELL-BEING of the dog as well as its health on that particular day. Like us humans, all animals will have more sensitive days than others. This may be a physical issue from being run down or even going through a period of stress or depression.
Most often, the main affect of vaccinations on your pet will be a feeling of tiredness. They may not be as perky as usual. This may, in part, come from the experience of getting the vaccine itself. Being taken to the vet and being punctured is not an everyday occurrence for dogs and it may leave them a little rattled. As long as you give them lots of love and positive reinforcement before, during and after the experience, it shouldn’t affect their long term well being. Lots of rest is also very important. If your dog does seem particularly unwell or develops a fever, it is best to speak to the vet in case there is a problem. However, problems from vaccines are exceedingly rare.
Generally, bathing your dog won’t be one of their favorite activities. Some may behave perfectly fine in the water, but many can find it a stressful experience in itself. Having their vaccinations can make them feel a certain amount of discomfort. This is why the day you get them vaccinated is not a good time to give them a bath. It can add more stress to an already confusing day for them.
Another reason for not bathing your dog after a vaccination is because their bodies will be working on feeling better. If you wash them and then don’t dry them thoroughly, they can be more susceptible to developing a cold.
