End The Torture And Slaughter Of Innocent Dogs & Cats

Thanks to your support and the work of many local activists, the position now compared to what it was in 2014, when we were finally able to see the trade made illegal in Thailand, has also improved elsewhere in Asia.

In the past year alone, we have seen Taiwan declare the killing of dogs for meat illegal. Although thousands of dogs continue to be killed every week in Yulin and other cities in southern China, the actual Yulin festival is no longer recognised by authorities there, with over 10 million Chinese petitioning the Government to end it.

Farmers in Korea are resorting to desperate methods to fight the growing wave of opposition to dog meat in that country. As of July 2018, Soi Dog is supporting the Korea-based organisation CARE, in rescuing and caring for nearly 200 survivors of the dog meat trade. The dogs were callously dumped by dog meat traders who were desperately trying to claim land for a dog meat market. CARE has recently led the first successful prosecution against a farmer for illegally killing dogs on his farm for meat.

A petition which Soi Dog Foundation shared passed the 200,000 vote mark and has led to the Korean Government reviewing the current laws on dog meat. In Indonesia, the Ministry of Agriculture is reported to have announced that they will enforce existing animal welfare laws and ban the killing of dogs for meat.

Soi Dog Foundation is also in discussions with authorities in Vietnam regarding a ban there. Initial discussions in Hanoi have been slow but positive.

But pledges and promises mean nothing until actual laws are introduced – and then enforced. Many of the countries involved have few if any properly trained veterinarians, and see the killing of dogs and cats for meat as a way of controlling numbers. Investing huge amounts of money in introducing humane methods of control is not a priority for developing nations. We must continue to show that the health dangers connected to the industry, and the damage it does to both their international reputation and their tourism industry, makes it imperative for them to ban it.
