We are a NO kill shelter which means we do not euthanize to combat overcrowding. HOWEVER, a lot of the animals die off because each staff has on average 80 - 90 animals to look after and quite a few of these will be sick and require special medical attention which we cannot provide since we do not have a fulltime inhouse veterinarian at the moment. Diseases get spreaded very quickly because the cages are placed in close proximity to each other so although we have more than enough cages, we don't have space to ensure adequate separation between them. Most animals will NOT be adopted and die at the shelter again because of a lack of medical attention and overworked staff. The surviving animals who do not fall to contagious diseases end up being there for years. Some die of old age, never again to taste freedom or see a rising sun without bars. It is VERY common to have abandoned pets to die slowly of progressive starvation resulting from depression. Food costs alone exceed RM10,000 a month and quite a large part of this is borne by financial donations with the rest covered by generous donations of rice and petfood. Even with this large expense, the dogs at the shelter only get 1 meal a day because to give them a second meal will incur costs of another few thousands which the shelter cannot hope to cover successfully for extended periods.
