SRI Rice Planting In Sarawak

WWF-Malaysia promotes sustainable and organic rice farming method, Systems of Rice Intensification or SRI in the highland of Sarawak in collaboration with SRI Lovely and Forum Masyarakat Adat Dataran Tinggi Borneo (FORMADAT).
This initiative is supported by CIMB Islamic Bank to improve livelihood and conserve the highland forests.
On 24-25 July, SRI technical advisor, Captain (Rtd) Zakaria Kamantasha gave on-site training session to farmers in Long Langai, Ba’ Kelalan.
It was great to see interested farmers to start small trial plots to see the difference between traditional and SRI farming methods.
Through the on-site training, the farmers were able to understand better on SRI methods through open discussions in identifying and resolving possible challenges during farming.
SRI method was selected for the farmers in Ba’ Kelalan because it has been practised
successfully in many neigbouring counties.
It also plays multiple roles in environmental protection such as omitting the use of chemicals, bringing benefits to ecosystem services (e.g. provision of clean water for irrigation) and improving yield, thus reducing land conversion from forests to agriculture land.
