There is scientific evidence that fish feel pain, contrary to what the unlicensed cosmetic surgery practitioners quoted in the article have said. It is highly questionable as to whether adequate anesthesia, and pre and post-surgery pain relief, is provided for procedures that are presently being carried out by unlicensed individuals.

The SPCA is strongly against invasive aesthetic procedures that do not benefit the animal’s quality of life. Cosmetic surgery is unnecessary and comes with considerable risk for the animal, compromising its welfare in the process.
