Trees and plants absorb water into the ground and soak up excess rainwater, preventing floods. They also store water in the ground and release moisture through their leaves, mitigating the impact of drought. Their roots hold soil together and minimise erosions and landslides. Destroying this environmental integrity such as clearing forests and paving large ground areas will ultimately remove our rights to a clean environment.

‘We must aim to achieve development in a sustainable way to balance our aspirations for economic growth without compromising our natural capital (environmental assets, social systems, cultural resources). Only then can we ensure higher standards of living for current and future generations’ – GE14 Open Letter to the presidents of all political parties in Malaysia.

WWF-Malaysia Executive Director/CEO, Dato’ Dr Dionysius Sharma hopes that politicians from all political parties and independent candidates will recognise the environmental aspirations of the people, particularly the youth.
