In the absence of sustainable development and without proper protection of nature, the risks of natural disasters will increase.

Floods and drought for instance destroy crops and livestock, leading to loss of livelihoods and food insecurity.

Both lead to different health implications from lack of sanitation, and waterborne and airborne diseases.

The costs to clean up after severe flooding, or to provide water during shortages, can run into millions of ringgit.

Imagine if these disasters are recurring, further exacerbating poverty and other problems already faced by the vulnerable and marginalized in society.

‘We believe that environmental conservation deserves a greater emphasis in your aspirations for our country.

Sustainable development should be a goal that ensures a win-win in the environmental, social and economic dimensions.

We urge you to make this a priority above party politics.

By informing the voters your aspirations and plans for sustainable development in Malaysia, you allow them to make informed decisions with their votes’ – GE14 Open Letter to the presidents of all political parties in Malaysia.

Help make environment an issue you can vote on – ask your local politicians how they will tackle the issue!
