The local people in Semporna use mangrove wood for construction of houses and jetties, and other uses. We are part of the natural ecosystems and our very own survival depends on them.
A safe, clean, healthy and sustainable environment is necessary for the full enjoyment of a vast range of human rights.
This includes at the most basic level, the right to food, medicine, clean water and air, which in turn fulfills the right to health; the right to shelter (where we get our materials from), and livelihoods (many communities’ derive income from natural resources).
“We must aim to achieve development in a sustainable way to balance our aspirations for economic growth without compromising our natural capital (environmental assets, social systems, cultural resources). Only then can we ensure higher standards of living for current and future generations.
I hope that politicians from all political parties and independent candidates will recognise the environmental aspirations of the people”- Dato’ Dr Dionysius Sharma, WWF-Malaysia Executive Director/CEO.
Help make environment an issue you can vote on – ask your local politicians how they will tackle the issue!
