In an online survey on environmental concerns that was carried out recently, more than 86% Malaysians are concerned with pollution of rivers and seas. This makes sense as marine debris particularly is a global problem that impacts people residing in coastal communities in a lot of ways.

For instance local fishermen have to change location or not fish at all if too much waste is seen floating. At times they are also required to change their fishing gear as waste caught by gill nets included wooden crates, glass bottles, tin cans, cardboard, plastic bags, bottles and other plastic objects. This problem greatly affects people whose livelihoods depend on the coastal area.

Human rights to environment simply means the ‘right of all persons, communities and peoples to a safe, secure, healthy and ecologically sound environment that is protected, preserved and improved both for the benefit of the present and future generations, and in recognition of the inherent value of ecosystems and biodiversity’.

Everyone deserves to live in a clean environment. You can contribute by reducing the amount of plastics you use and throw away. Start by saying no to single- use plastics, such as straws, shopping bags and mineral water bottles. You can also help make environment an issue you can vote on – ask your local politicians how they will tackle the issue!
