A Helping Hand. This Is Pop-Pop, A Juvenile Asian ..
This is Pop-pop, a juvenile Asian koel who was found by a member of public along a corridor of a Housing Development Board (HDB). The adoptive crow parents were observed to be on guard, so Pop-pop was transferred into a makeshift nest and placed up a tree for his parents to resume care.
Female koels are known to lay eggs in crows’ nests. Not because they are lazy, but their chicks require protein-rich meals, and the koels themselves- as adults- are fruit eating. So evolution has taught them the “sustainable” practice to leave their offspring in the care of omnivorous crows. Not realising the difference, crows care for their nestlings until they fledge and leave the nest.
Saving Pop-Pop’s life goes a long way with a concerted effort by compassionate individuals.
