Gansito’s sad story was one of the most horrific cases of neglect we have ever encountered. She was successfully treated at Soi Dog Foundation and now lives a wonderful life with her new family in the US. However, her story must never be forgotten and must be a catalyst for change.
In late December 2014, Thailand introduced its first animal welfare law. Prior to this, acts of animal cruelty were not considered a criminal offence. The new law changed this, introducing maximum penalties of up to 2 years’ imprisonment and/or a 40,000 THB fine (approximately US$1,200).
But to this day, sentencing in animal abuse cases continues to be shockingly lenient, meaning there is no adequate deterrent in place. Until the sentencing reflects the serious nature of the crime, incidences of horrific animal cruelty will continue.
