Last September, a man entered a temple in Thailand and beat to death Jaw Toa, a dog that was chained up in the grounds and unable to escape. The dog had a very sweet nature and was liked by all the other monks, being the abbot’s pet.
The offender was fined 5,000 THB (about 150 USD) and sentenced to 6 months’ imprisonment, suspended for 2 years (no custodial sentence).
Exactly how much suffering must be inflicted on an animal before a perpetrator of animal cruelty is punished to the full extent of the law?
Thailand introduced its first Animal Welfare Bill in December 2014, making acts of animal cruelty a criminal offence punishable by up to 2 years’ imprisonment and/or an approximately 1,200 USD fine.
Please click below to join with Thai animal lovers in signing this petition to Thailand’s Minister of Justice urging for animal cruelty offences to be punished to the full extent of the law.
