Assault Riffles & Hit-and-Run
___________________________
Heroes at the ice-cold Kiev animal shelter have been run down by a car and need help to walk again.
Roma is a 28-year-old security guard at the shelter. He has a patient and tender way with the animals. But since being brutally run down by a vehicle due to his work at the shelter, Roma has been immobilized with no way to earn a living or make a future for himself. He needs more surgery. The second victim of that car attack, Oksana, is a 45-year-old nurse who made her home right on the grounds of the shelter. She is skilled at caring for sick animals and took pride in her job, but her smile has vanished behind the pain of a broken back and numerous breaks and fractures of her legs and ribs. She has had four operations already but needs another to be able to walk again. In Ukraine, health care is paid for privately by the families of the sick. But neither of these victims have family to look after them. For both victims to have a final round of surgery, the estimated cost is approximately $9,000. The shelter director in Kiev did her best to raise funds to help them with hospitalization and surgery, but she has exhausted her resources.
“Now in the shelter are 1,006 dogs and 318 cats,” shelter founder Tamara Tarnawska explains. “Many animals in the shelter are brought here wounded from the war zone.”
Tragically, men with an assault rifle opened fire on the shelter earlier this month and 5 dogs died from their bullet wounds. These are violent times.
“The police tell us that there is a war in the country…..” Tamara said, explaining that there is no outside help.
Two years ago, shelter worker Petro was stabbed while protecting the shelter from an invasion. He now drives to supermarkets each day to collect donated meat that has reached its expiration date. That is cooked along with macaroni to feed all the animals.
“Of course it would be much easier to feed dogs with dry food, but we do not have such a financial ability to buy dry food for thousands of dogs,” Tamara continues.
Harmony Fund has purchased food for the animals here during the hardest of times and we’d like to help again.
Today we are asking for help to heal the shelter heroes and to be able to provide some kibble for the animals. Donations to our Ukraine Rescue Fund will bring hope and healing to rescuers and animals who greatly need our help right now.
