Poultry (including chickens, quails and pheasants) are not allowed to be sold or displayed in Singapores bird shops, under the Pet shop licensing conditions for sale and display of birds laid out by the Agri-Food & Veterinary Authority of Singapore (AVA).
Yet in 2017, ACRES Animal Crime Investigation Unit found 208 online advertisements offering quails and chickens for sale on three platforms alone.
Thanks to AVA who responded by taking appropriate action on some sellers and some other advertisements have been removed on online platforms such as Carousell, Locanto and Gumtree Singapore.
However, with the absence of strict regulations for online sales of live animals in Singapore, new advertisements spring up every week, making online trade in live animals, and the resultant unregulated ownership a serious issue in Singapore.
Is banning the sale of live animals online a step forward? Facebook commerce policy does not allow sale of live animals, yet many pages offer live animals for sales.
What do you think?
TAKE ACTION! If you come across any online advertisements selling poultry or prohibited wildlife in Singapore, please flag/report the ad, if necessary even on a daily basis.
