We often relate animal sentience to apes, elephants, dogs and cats or farm animals that they can feel just like you and me. But do we readily extend this notion to all other wild animals who may hiss and scratch, or be without expressive eyebrows and vocal chords?
A kind and considerate resident called us for two civets who could not find their way out of the house. Being nocturnal, the duo spent the day snoozing together, but were eventually relocated to a suitable habitat just behind the house.
Unlike this resident, many others are not so tolerable of unfamiliar wild animals like monitor lizards, civets or bats, and requests for them to be removed from their area. We do not have to love all animals, but recognising their right to a home is a start of respecting the animals we share our space with. And just like us, they too have a family to feed, to protect, and to survive.
