It’s our dear colleague Asirvartham Lasal’s last days of work after spending 40 years with us. He’s WWF-Malaysia’s longest-serving staff, perhaps even in the entire WWF International network!
His lifelong journey with WWF-Malaysia began in 1976 after he finished his Masters in Zoology. He spearheaded the Mobile Education Unit (MEU) for 25 years from 1977-2003.
“When I was running the Mobile Education Unit, I travelled outstation for 25 days a month, 8 months a year, for 25 years, visiting schools to educate young children to love and respect nature. This was despite being married with two young children. I only came back home to take my salary, pay bills and off on the road again within a week,” Lasal said.
In his 40-year journey he faced many challenges including a near-fatal accident near Mentakab, missing the birth of his child, and being threatened by poachers. Nothing great has been achieved without sacrifice. It was his passion to educate the young that kept him going.
In Tamil, “Asirvatham” means “blessing,” and Lasal truly has been a blessing to anyone who has had the good fortune to encounter him in their lives.
