Soi Dog Foundation

10 years ago, a woman met a man and a dog who would change her life.

Today, Claudia Sigrist is Soi Dog’s volunteer regional representative for Switzerland, Germany, and Austria. Then, Claudia was in Phuket, Thailand on holiday with her husband. Claudia was already involved in animal welfare work in Switzerland so she made it a priority to visit Soi Dog Foundation, which was a much smaller operation at the time.

Co-founder John Dalley gave Claudia and her husband a tour of the shelter. It was there that Claudia noticed a white dog with her 12 tiny puppies. They had just arrived. There had been threats to poison them. Claudia instantly felt a special connection with the mama dog. And she made the decision to sponsor the dog, who was named Joya.

Only a few days after her return to Switzerland, Claudia got the news that Joya had fallen ill. She’d lost a lot of weight. And sadly, because she was in a weakened state, she was attacked by two other dogs. Back then, there was no vet on site and resources were extremely limited. Joya was transferred to a local vet clinic, and John visited her there every day. His wife, co-founder Gill Dalley, cooked daily meals for Joya so she could regain her strength.

Eventually, Joya recovered. And back in Switzerland, Claudia had begun to dedicate all her spare time to collecting medical supplies and other donations for Soi Dog Foundation. She says she was infected with the “Soi Dog virus” since day one!

Unable to forget Joya, Claudia returned to Phuket as a shelter volunteer in April 2008. She spent time with Joya every day, and it didn’t take long for Joya to completely steal her heart. After months of preparation, Claudia welcomed Joya into her home in December 2008. And almost 9 years later, Joya is still enjoying a wonderful life with Claudia.
