IT TAKES A VILLAGE TO RAISE A CHILD.
We reckon, it takes a nation to raise compassion and respect for those around us.
With 20 staff members, we are very much a coordinated mess with specific roles to fulfil. In our time, we’ve witnessed the good, the bad and the ugly done unto animals, but our passion drives us forward.
Our animal care-givers persevere through sweat and rain to care for over 150 residents at our rescue centre. Gretchen Ong?, Head of Animal Care, explains her motivation, “I can voice up for the voiceless and I could live my daily lives with respect and empathy towards all living beings.”
Of course, sharing and inspiring others is equally important, and it starts with our youths.
“Children are naturally emphatic beings and as adults,” offers Edwina Lim?, Education Executive and student project liaison, “We play a major role to enhance this emotion, to lead them to change their lifestyle in animal protection movement. Whatever we do, children mimic our behaviour. By reaching out to them, they in turn will share their knowledge with their parents and who knows, might take actions to make a difference for the animals.”
Sumita Thiagarajan?, Education Executive who conducts talks and tours at ACRES, believes that the mistreatment of animals stems from the lack of awareness. She adds, “Education tackles the root cause by raising awareness of cruel practices such as animal entertainment or factory farming.”
Our vet, Dr. Venisri Prithivi Raj?, shares a quote by Dalai Lama- If you can’t help them, at least don’t hurt them.
“Working with animals require a different kind of compassion. One which is selfless because you wouldn’t expect to hear them say ‘thank you’ but instead you experience different forms of gratitude, and sometimes just the sound of flapping wings is enough to lift your spirit.”
