Indy, Why Are You rusting?
A few days ago, I noticed Indy’s fur turning reddish brown. It’s exactly like the colour of humans who have had their hair dyed black and it’s wearing off.
A quick check over at the internet reveals that it’s called “rusting” and it does happen to cats with black fur. There are several causes, ranging from aging, over exposure to the sun (well, yes to both as Indy is 9 years old now and he does like to sit in the sun) as well as the more alarming kidney, liver or thyroid problems or lack of protein in the diet.
I checked with the vet and sent him photos of Indy’s “rusted” fur and he said he wouldn’t be too worried about this. It happens to cats as they age. He also said that with the diet we are feeding them, there shouldn’t be a concern about lacking in protein.
Who says I’m “rusting’?
He loves it hot.
After more than 2 weeks of being back in Bunny’s Place, he asked to be let out and we relented, but Indy sprayed all over the place.
So, Indy, you have to go back to Bunny’s Place.
Cow, on the other hand, is 11 years old, but his black is still jet black.
However, Cow and Tabs both have a seasonal balding period every year. And this is the time of year where they have bald patches. After a few months, based on previous experience, the fur grows back. Maybe it’s shedding season for them.
Balding at the back.
Tabs has two bald patches on her body and her belly is bald as well. But last year was much worse. Then, the fur grew back after a few months. So, it’s probably a seasonal thing.
At one time, Bunny was almost entirely bald (many years ago), then his fur grew back.
Now, Bunny is very furry.
