Well done Spca JB! Cruelty to animals is a red flag that leads towards cruelty towards human beings.
This case of neglect and abuse was reported to SPCAJB by a good Samaritan and neighbor on 19 Aug 2017. The following day a site visit was carried out by our Volunteer Committee Members . The Rottweiler was found to be kept in a grossly inadequate makeshift shelter on the pavement outside of the terrace house premises and with no proper sanitation and clean drinking water. The dog was chained with two chains to restrict its movements and a heavy metal weight was attached via a thick metal chain to its neck to further weigh it down and restrain its movements. The animal was found to be nervous, stressed with blood shot eyes and exhibited aggressive behavior typical of abused animals kept in such paltry conditions. The neighbor was advised to make a report with the Dept of Veterinary Services (DVS) Johor (Enforcement Division). A report was also made by SPCAJB. A team from DVS accompanied by the Police arrived soon after and the dog was removed from the premises, despite the vehement protests of the owner and his wife. The investigation has revealed that the dog is about 1 years old and is grossly underweight due to neglect. DVS has confirmed that this is as a case of cruelty. The dog is now under the care of DVS pending the completion of the investigation. We are grateful for the involvement of the public in bringing it to our attention to enable us to help put an end to such wanton neglect and animal abuse.SPCA JB would like to remind members of the public and pet owners that they owe a duty of care to provide proper living conditions for their pets which include shelter from the elements and a clean and sanitized rest and food areas for their pets. A good start to ensuring the welfare of an animal is to respect its five fundamental freedoms: 1. Freedom from Hunger and Thirst, 2. Freedom from Discomfort, 3. Freedom from Pain, Injury or Disease, 4. Freedom to Express Normal Behaviour, and 5. Freedom from Fear and Distress. SPCAJB is grateful and would like to thank the neighbor for highlighting the plight of this dog and bringing it to our attention to help put an end to its suffering. We advise the public to make reports with DVS Johor (07-2160016) if they witness animal abuse and cruelty With the public’s vigilance , cooperation and partnership, we can make Johor Bahru a better and humane society and a safe haven for all animals.
