International Whale Shark Day celebrates these gentle marine giants that roam the oceans around the globe. These are world’s second largest fish, and they have an enormous appetite – their favourite meal is plankton! Being a filter feeder, the beast juts out its formidably sized jaws and scoop these tiny plants and animals up, along with any small fish that happen to be around, with their colossal gaping mouths while swimming close to the water’s surface.
While these gentle creatures do occasionally roam into Malaysian waters – mainly in the South China Sea, lucky scuba divers or snorkelers could often spot them in clear sight. But they are also vulnerable from threats including irresponsible tourism. Hence, we strongly advise divers to always keep a distance away and simply be mesmerise!
