PIONEERING BETTER ANIMAL WELFARE IN CAMBODIA

Phenomenal. Thats the word Rath and Monich chose to describe their intensive 2-week training in shelter medicine at Soi Dog Foundation. Rath is a shelter assistant and Monich is a veterinary assistant at Animal Rescue Cambodia (ARC), Soi Dogs first international partner rescue. For 2 weeks, they trained with Soi Dog veterinarians to learn about shelter protocols, running spay/neuter clinics, and delivering high quality medical care to cats and dogs.

According to Rath and Monich, the most important lessons they learned were pre/post-operation sterilisation procedures, techniques for inserting endotracheal tubes in sedated dogs, how to give injections, and how to manage disease outbreaks through contamination control (e.g., quarantine). The ARC trainees said they were amazed at how efficient Soi Dog vets and vet nurses are when performing sterilisations. Soi Dog and ARC share a commitment to spay/neuter as a key way to improve animal welfare, as it prevents unwanted kittens and puppies from being born into a lifetime of suffering on the streets. To date, Soi Dog has sterilised more than 160,000 dogs and cats.

Aside from working hard at the Soi Dog shelter and hospital, Rath and Monich also travelled with the outreach team to learn how Soi Dog educates community members about responsible pet ownership and care. We loved to see how the Soi Dog outreach team approached local people to provide food for animals and to explain how to take care of their owned or stray animals they said. Founded in 2016, ARC has a strong emphasis on community outreach and education and operates a Pagoda Ambassador Program. Unwanted dogs and cats are often dumped at the many Buddhist temples in the capital city. ARC ensures that the animals living at pagodas are sterilised and get medical attention.

Next month, with support from Soi Dog, ARC will employ its very first on-site veterinarian, allowing them to provide far more spay/neuter and rescue services. We look forward to watching Rath, Monich, and the rest of the ARC team help more animals than ever before!
