Happy #WorldOrangutanDay! Our orangutan conservation team uses three methods to count Bornean orangutan nests. The nests help us to estimate how many Bornean orangutans exist and where they are in the Central Forests of Sabah:

1. Ground survey – this is done on foot, is the most physically exhausting and takes the longest time to do.

2. Helicopter survey – this method involves flying over tree tops, according to grids. Highly expensive, can cover a large area in one go, and is the fastest method.

3. Drone survey – as seen in this video, the drone will record footage of the tree tops and the team will spot and record the nests when they watch the footage. This method is faster than ground survey, cheaper than the helicopter survey, but a drone can only fly a limited time depending on the type used. A fixed wing drone can fly up to a few hours compared to a multi-rotor drone that can only fly for 30 mins or less.

Each method has its own pros and cons, but no matter which method is chosen, they all depend on the weather. None can be applied during heavy storms, for example.
