Aug 3, 2017 A guard dog in Malaysia became an unlikely occupant in a witness room as its alleged abuser faces the court of law.
Singaporean businessman Yee Kok Chew claimed trial at a magistrates court here to allegedly abusing the guard dog, known as Furby, in an incident that went viral on social media.
As the court proceedings went on, Furby, who is currently under the care of the Petaling district veterinary office, waited in the witness room with a veterinary officer.
Yee, 57, was accused of beating, hurting and abusing the light-coloured Mongrel breed male dog.
He allegedly committed the offence at a security post at Jalan BK6 E/4 (1), Taman Melody, Bandar Kinrara, Puchong at 8.49pm on April 2.
He faces a maximum RM50,000 fine, or up to a year in jail, or both upon conviction.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Shafiq Hasim offered bail at RM3,000 with one surety. Lawyer Joshua Andran, who represented the accused, did not object. The court fixed Sept 4 for mention. Yee made bail.
In a two-minute 43-second video that was widely circulated on the Internet, a man was seen violently beating a dog. The man fell off his bicycle after the dog broke free of its leash and barked at him, leading to the violent beating.
The video enraged animal lovers with some protesting at Taman Melody urging for the man to be arrested. On April 7, Yee apologised for his actions in an exclusive interview with TheStarTV.
