Our Cats� Verdict On Gold-D (the New Catfood In Town)

Many cats like to eat fish. Our cats do too.

But we read about tuna (and even possibly, salmon) being toxic these days due to their higher position on the food chain and the quantity of toxins and heavy metals found in them is supposedly at a dangerously toxic level.

I have been looking for fish catfood that is made from smaller fish as we are told that smaller fish may be less toxic (they are lower on the food chain). Unfortunately, most fish catfood on the market is tuna-based.

Then, Gold-D was introduced in Malaysia and it has mackerel and sardine flavours, both being smaller fish, and hopefully, less toxic.

There is also a school of thought that says cats should not eat fish. I did ask why and was told by the founder of Gold-D, who is an anthropologist, that this may be one of the reasons:

We have a chicken in sauce which we did not register for Malaysia. the paper work involved was very long so we decided to do this (fish) range first.

Actually, the movement that cat should not eat fish is because of this idea that cats used to live in the Sahara desert which has no fish. But the problem is at that time (thousands of years ago), Sahara was probably not a desert.

Fish, for example, sardine, is actually a good source of food. if you look at the ingredient, i did not have to add taurine for sardine canned food because sardines contained sufficient taurine.

The fish that are of concern is tuna because of its mercury level. But unfortunately tuna are a hot favourite for cats.

So i think the more important issue is one of moderation in terms of food.

Interestingly, Coco&Joe also uses only sardines in their Chicken&Fish flavour, not tuna.

So, anyway, I bought Gold-D and all the cats love it!

The gravy is made of tapioca starch and guar gum.
It does not contain any carrageenan.

I mix the fish food in a 1:1 proportion with home-cooked chicken (Lisa Pierson’s recipe) and being the Asian cats that they are, the fish taste makes a lot of difference – they love it!
