In more encouraging news from Vietnam, the first ever prison sentences for stealing dogs and selling them into the dog meat trade were handed out on Saturday, May 27th, 2017.
A court in the southern province of Tay Ninh sentenced six Vietnamese citizens to 3-7 years in prison for dog theft. The dog ring had been operating in the area for about a month before the arrests.
The group was captured when police raided a property on December 23, 2016. A total of 47 dogs were found at the scene, 32 of which were already dead. The dogs weighed a total of 512 kilograms, with a value of around VND26 million ($1,100).
The fight against the Vietnamese dog meat trade continues to gain momentum, and with the recent news of District 12, Ho Chi Minh City wishing to work with Soi Dog Foundation to become dog meat trade-free, we are hopeful that one day we will see it wiped out forever.
