BANNED: DOG MEAT SALES AT YULIN FESTIVAL
Soi Dog Foundation welcomes the news coming out of China regarding a ban on the sale of dog meat at the annual Yulin festival, which begins June 21st.
As with all such reports, we will exercise caution until we see the results.
Officially, the authorities state that the Yulin festival was stopped 3 years ago. But this has not prevented large numbers of dogs from being slaughtered or sold to rescuers during that period – though not on the same scale as before.
Unfortunately there is a widespread belief that the Yulin festival is responsible for most of the dog meat industry in China. This is not the case. Millions of dogs are slaughtered in China for their meat and skins every year, particularly in the southern and northeastern provinces. Yulin itself has many restaurants selling dog meat year-round.
Any end to the Yulin festival is NOT an end to the dog meat industry in China.
Local activists continue to fight the industry. Only last week, Jeff Beri (who was supported by Soi Dog last year) flew out to China to help 600+ dogs intercepted by local activists south of Beijing. Trucks transporting dogs across China are a common sight – as they are in Vietnam, South Korea and other countries in southeast Asia.
If dog meat sales at the Yulin festival are truly over, then it is another battle won. But the war against the cruel dog meat trade continues – and local activists still need our support.
