WHEN KINDNESS HURTS: THE EFFECTS OF RELEASING ANIMALS
The ACRES Animal Crime Investigation Unit (ACIU) responded to a tip-off and looked into the animal release/liberation practices in Singapore.
These practices involve the release of animals that can result in thousands of deaths. Apart from compromising the welfare of the surviving animals, the impact to the ecosystem can be highly detrimental while releasing (abandoning) animals purchased as pets is illegal.
The shocking observations revealed that animals, like munia birds (as many as 200 birds at a time), frogs, cockles (approximately eight tonnes), pomfret fish (one tonne) and crabs were released.
ACRES is extremely concerned on how such huge quantities of live animals can be obtained and how these release operations are conducted openly with a significant number of attendees. The findings have been handed over to the Agri-food and Veterinary Authority (AVA) for further investigations.
Here’s what you can share to raise awareness on why animal abandonment / release of animals is cruel:
BELIEF: Buying animals to release liberates them from being consumed as food.
FACT: The market identifies these purchases as a demand, subsequently calling for only more animals to be bred or caught (from the wild) for food.
BELIEF: Liberating animals will set them free.
FACT: These animals, often caught from the wild, are transported in unspeakable conditions where some are even smuggled. During the this transport, many animals often die from the stress. Majority of the animals who are released often suffer from stress being introduced into a new environment and die.
Help us raise awareness on the effects of releasing animals into the wild and blow the whistle on animal abandonment. You can also read more about NParks’ campaign “Operation No Release” at http://tinyurl.com/k7rayo6 and http://tinyurl.com/mz67rtz
