Soi Dog is looking for partners in Central Vietnam to help shut down the dog meat trade through public education, vet training, and animal rescue.
Last week, Soi Dog’s International Director of Animal Welfare Dr. Katherine Polak was in Central Vietnam meeting with local rescue groups as part of Soi Dog’s International Partner Program. She met with Vietnam Animal Aid and Rescue, PAWS for Compassion, Vietnam Cat Rescue, Da Nang Pet Rescue, and Hanoi Pet Rescue to discuss strategies for tackling this horrendous trade.
Most of the dog and cat meat trade occurs in the North of the country. Central Vietnam is a crucial area to work in as almost every one of these animals travels through central provinces to reach their final destination. In 2016, the only animal shelter in the area was closed after it was revealed that it was taking “rescued” dogs and selling them to dog butchers for money.
Soi Dog aims to support local rescue groups through capacity building and technical support to create a stronger sheltering and rescue network, and promote veterinary and shelter medicine training.
