THE CASE OF SEGAR ROAD MONKEY

Thanks to many of you who wrote to us concerned, about the monkey at Segar road.

ACRES is equally concerned for the community and these monkeys in our garden city – where wild encounters will become inevitable as they will use the green corridors adjacent to housing estates.

Unfortunately, the behaviour of the monkey at Segar Road has been severely altered due to public feeding and harassment. ACRES has met with residents on the ground on several occasions and also has educated callers who report of sightings not to feed or interact with monkeys in general.

While this situation could have been prevented through concerted education efforts and enforcement action against feeders, we are now working with the Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority of Singapore (AVA) to safely remove and rehabilitate the monkey for relocation.

ACRES strongly opposes removals and culling as a reactive solution for human-macaque conflict.

If you appreciate wildlife, please remember your wildlife etiquette when you encounter wildlife in our garden city – maintain your distance! Do not feed or approach to interact.

If you see people feeding wild animals, please advise them not to, and report to authorities with photos for enforcement action!
