From Humane Society International:
Did you know that every year more than 100 million animals suffer and die in testing laboratories worldwide? Cats, dogs, monkeys, rabbits, and mice -- to name a few -- are bred, injected, infected, cut open, genetically altered and forced to eat drugs and chemicals for science and safety testing.
To make matters worse, animals often react differently than people to chemicals and medicines, opening the results to question -- or even being written off as irrelevant. This is the cruel reality of animal testing. And a growing number of scientists agree: it’s time to end animal testing for good and bring the science of safety testing into the 21st century. HSI is the leading international animal protection organisation on animal testing issues. Our work with governments, universities, and global companies is transforming testing methods and regulations. We’re helping to re-write laws that are seeing tremendous reductions in animal testing requirements and the adoption of cutting-edge lab technology that is often faster, cheaper and more relevant to humans. We call it ‘Tox21’ -- toxicology fit for the 21st century -- where lab robots replace lab rats and research benches are filled with computers, not cages. And we're making real progress. Already, government agencies in the United States are supporting Tox21, and we're taking our vision to the European Union. HSI’s goal is to improve the quality of science for people and the planet by making animal testing a thing of the past. This is tough, painstaking work, but we have already saved millions of animals from horrific suffering in testing labs. We hope you continue to stand with us as we try to save the tens of millions more who still need our help. Thanks for being there to help animals in laboratories -- and animals everywhere. Sincerely, Andrew Rowan President/Chief Executive Officer Humane Society International
